MacReacher

Your Mac, from Omarchy.

A native GTK4 viewer puts your Mac in a Hyprland window, keyboard first. Super is ⌘, the iOS Simulator can stream on its own, and the session stays encrypted between your machines.

Built for a keyboard-first desktop

Click the Mac's screen to capture the keyboard. MacReacher asks the compositor to pass your shortcuts through, so Hyprland's binds reach the Mac instead of your desktop: Super is ⌘ Command, so Super+Space opens Spotlight on the Mac. Press Ctrl Alt Esc to give the keyboard back to Linux. If PC muscle memory wins, the session menu can make Ctrl act as ⌘ instead.

Tile just the Simulator

Stream the whole Mac display or a single app. Pick the iOS Simulator, Xcode or Terminal from the app switcher and it gets its own window, ready to tile beside your editor. The Simulator still runs on the Mac. This is remote control of the Mac's Simulator, not a substitute for testing on a physical device.

The rest of the session

  • Low-latency H.264 at up to 60 fps, sized to your window.
  • Multiple Mac displays, plus Fit Mac Display to This Window for a virtual display shaped like your tile.
  • An app switcher with live Mac app icons.
  • Two-way clipboard for text and images.
  • Mac audio through PipeWire.
  • Macs on your network are found automatically.

Private by default

The Linux viewer uses the same signed handshake and AES-256-GCM session encryption as the Apple and Android viewers. On first connection it shows the host's security code to compare with the Host window, and later identity changes are refused. Saved passwords go in your desktop's Secret Service keyring. The viewer prefers the LAN at home and falls back to a saved Tailscale route away. No MacReacher relay is involved. See security and Tailscale setup.

Install

Omarchy and Arch

yay -S macreacher

Or open Omarchy's Install menu, choose the AUR option and search for macreacher.

Other distributions

Download the release tarball (SHA-256 on the downloads page), then:

tar xf macreacher-linux-1.0.0.tar.gz
cd macreacher-linux-1.0.0
sudo make install PREFIX=/usr/local

It needs Python 3.11+, PyGObject, GTK 4.12+, libadwaita 1.5+, libsecret, python-cryptography, PipeWire, and GStreamer 1.22+ with gst-plugins-base, gst-plugins-bad, gst-libav and gst-plugin-gtk4. Optional extras are python-zeroconf for network discovery and gst-plugin-va for hardware decoding.

Connect for the first time

  1. Install MacReacher Host on the Mac and grant it Screen Recording and Accessibility.
  2. Open MacReacher on Linux and click Add next to a Mac found on your network, or add it by address.
  3. Compare the security code with Host Identity Fingerprint in the Host window, and approve only if they match.
  4. Sign in with that Mac's macOS account.

Where it has been tested

MacReacher for Linux is built and tested on Omarchy with Hyprland. GNOME, KDE and X11 sessions have not been tested yet; how shortcut capture behaves there depends on the compositor. The viewer is free. You need MacReacher Host on the Mac you want to reach.
